Hi, there, my name is Justin Blake from the interview training website Kareerberry. And in this next tutorial, I will teach you how can you describe yourself professionally in a job interview. Now, how you describe yourself at the start of your interview is going to be the difference between a pass or a fail. So if you don’t get your interview off to a flying start, you are unlikely to pass. If you have a job interview coming up for any role or any organization, please make sure you stay tuned because I promise to help you be successful.
Let’s get straight into the tutorial. So to help you pass your interview, I will cover the following three things during this tutorial.
- Number one, I will explain why the interviewer is asking you to describe yourself, and more importantly, I will explain what they want to hear in your response.
- Number two, I will tell you the five most important words you should use when describing yourself in an interview that are guaranteed to impress the hiring manager.
- And then number three, I will give you three brilliant examples scripts you can use to describe yourself positively during your interview that will make you the standout candidate.
Number one
So to begin with, why is the interviewer asking you to describe yourself and what do they want to hear in your answer? Well, the interviewer will ask you one of the following three questions right at the start of your job interview. It will either be Tell me about yourself, introduce yourself, or how would you describe yourself now, whichever question they ask you. This is where you need to describe yourself in a way that sets the rest of the interview up in a positive manner. Now, if you do not describe yourself in a way that the interviewer will find appealing, you will quickly lose confidence and the interview could go downhill rapidly.
The interviewer is asking you to describe yourself for two reasons.
- Reason number one, when you describe yourself in an interview, it gives you the chance to talk about something you should know really well. And that is yourself. It allows you to get into the flow of the interview. It also breaks the ice, and it helps you to create a positive first impression.
- And reason number two is because the interviewer wants to quickly assess whether or not your skills, traits and attributes are going to be a fit for their team and the role you have applied for. If the interviewer thinks you can add value to their company, they will definitely be interested in hiring you. However, if the manner in which you describe yourself at the start of your interview is weak and it is not aligned to their company values or what they are looking for, the interview could be cut short.
Number two
What are the five most important words you should use when describing yourself in an interview that are guaranteed to impress the hiring manager? Let’s take a look at them individually.
- The first word to use when describing yourself in an interview is industrious. Now I can almost guarantee you will be the only person who uses the word industrious to describe themselves at the interview. Now, the rest of the candidates will probably not even know what the word industrious means. Now, the word industrious is a great way to describe someone who is hardworking, diligent in their approach to task completion and someone who will always go above and beyond for their employer.
- The second word to use when describing yourself in an interview is results driven. This is a good one. Now, an employee that is results driven is an employer’s dream. Results driven people are ambitious, competitive, they are not afraid to fail, and they achieve much more than the average employee.
- The third word to use when describing yourself in an interview is flexible. The word flexible is a brilliant one to use because it tells the interviewer You are the type of person who will be available to work extra hours if needed. You will be happy to carry out tasks that are perhaps outside of your job description, and you will always put the needs of the business above everything else.
- The fourth word to use when describing yourself in an interview is goals. Now the word goals is another brilliant one to use. Now if you are the type of person who always has goals they are trying to achieve. It tells the interviewer You are focused, you plan ahead and you are a consistent achiever. Now, most people don’t have any goals. They just go along with the flow and they do what is asked of them. However, if you have goals, you are someone who is willing to improve, learn and constantly move forward.
- The fifth word to use when describing yourself in an interview is supportive. Now, do not underestimate how important being a supportive employee is in an organization. Supportive employees put the needs of others before their own supportive employees seek ways to help the team. They think of the bigger picture and they are willing to take on tasks outside of their job description.
